For over forty years now, students with Special Needs have been guaranteed a quality public education & under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). For the last twenty years or so, the percentage of students nationally who fall into this population has hovered around 13 percent according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). In independent schools that population is approximately half the size in part because private schools are not subject to the guidelines of IDEA. This means that parents who choose to enroll their children in independent schools must be prepared to advocate for their children who have unique learning profiles. On our inaugural episode of Taking Notes, Vanessa Rodriguez-Spencer talks about how she has navigated that road with her two children.
