PURPOSE

The Roots of Knowledge Empowerment Institute (ROKEI) virtual book club is designed to offer students the opportunity to gather and engage literature featuring Black authors and characters in the same way that our summer institute has for the last five years.

With the realities of Safer at Home orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we thought it would be safer to utilize the virtual platforms available to continue to provide programming.

STRUCTURE

We will take six weeks at a time to complete our selected texts. One day each week, there will be a Zoom gathering to discuss broad themes for the week’s reading and perhaps videos or essays complimentary to the texts featuring the author.

We will also use the Zoom sessions for smaller breakout group work, lead by our teaching assistants, so that the students have a chance to voice their thoughts and get to know one another better.

ELIGIBILITY

The club is open to rising 3rd graders through 12th graders. The six-week program fee is $200. Financial assistance is available. Inquiries should be made via the contact form at the bottom of this page.
