Virtual Book Club
September 11, 2020 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
The Roots of Knowledge Empowerment Institute (ROKEI) virtual book club is designed to offer students the opportunity to gather and engage literature featuring Black authors and characters in the same way that our summer institute has for the last five years. With the realities of Safer at Home orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we thought it would be safer to utilize the virtual platforms available to continue to provide programming.
We will take three weeks at a time to complete our selected texts. On the Monday of each week, there will be a Zoom gathering to discuss broad themes for the week’s reading and perhaps videos or essays complimentary to the texts featuring the author. We will also use the Zoom sessions for smaller breakout sessions lead by our teaching assistants so that the students have a chance to voice their thoughts and also get to know one another a bit better. Following the Zoom sessions, students will on their own, complete the assigned reading and other activities for the week prior to the next Zoom meeting. Students will be expected to cover 80-100 pages per week depending on the text.
The first book we will read will be The Beautiful Struggle by Ta-Nehisi Coates where he chronicles his life growing up in Baltimore. Our first meeting will be June 13th. The second book we will read will be The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas. The first meeting for that book will be July 13th. Families will be responsible for purchasing the texts on their own through booksellers. Please let us know if you run into problems securing texts.
